MEDIUM & REWARDING.

Avoid Palm Oil

Why?

Palm oil production is the largest cause of deforestation in Southeast Asia. That's a problem for 3 reasons:

1) deforestation increases the amount of CO2 released into the atmospehere because there are less trees to absorb it,

2) it is destroying orangutans' habitat and biodiversity,

3) it is high in saturated fats which is not good for our cardiovascular health.

How?

The problem is that palm oil is in almost everything we buy. From biscuits, to washing products, to make-up. Ew. Luckily, we can use tools like Palm Oil Checker to search for products without palm oil.

Compost

Why?

It is estimated that nearly half of the solid waste produced globally is organic or biodegradable. When it ends up in landfill, it rotts and releases methane, which is a very potent greenhouse gas. When the organic waste decomposes in a compost, it returns valuable nutrients to the soil. Those nutrients that made it possible to grow the foods in the first place. Composting is important because it helps maintain soil quality and fertility.

How?

Composting is very easy if you have a garden. But it is possible even if you live in a city. Check if there are any bins for food waste in the area where you live. Or if you're up for a challenge, you could even compost indoors.

Recycle

Why?

Recycling reduces the need for raw materials. If we've used them once, why not reusing them again? Recycling also helps ensure that the waste is dealt with responsibly, which reduced the risks of releases harmful chemicals if things just end up in landfill. We want the big brands to use recycled materials, right? So we need to do our bit to make sure the recyclable materials get back to them.

How?

Although there are recycling bins almost everywhere, not many people pay attentian to what belongs where. In many cases, labels placed above or on top of the bin could really help. If you're ensure what goes where, visit the Waste Management Solutions website.

Avoid Travelling For Business Meetings

Why?

I know there are some meetings that we simply need to attend in person. But opting for conference calls instead can reduce the amount of carbon emissions we would have caused if we travelled.

How?

Today's technology allows us to connect with people anywhere in the world, which can help us significantly reduce the CO2 emissions from travel. Although exploring different parts of the world is amazing, let's face it, we don't get to do that that much when we travel for work and spend most of our day in the office. So, next time you book a meeting, try to ask your colleagues if you could have a chat via Zoom, Skype, or Hangouts.
